Sometimes no matter how much an athlete warms up, stretches or works out before a major game or event, an injury is unavoidable. When you have multiple people running around a field or skating around the ice hitting each other, people are going to get hurt. Nine times out of ten, the injury that occurs will be unintentional. Accidents happen, even on the playing field. The coach or the team trainer will tend to the injury on the field for temporary relief, but it will be up to the athlete to find the sports injury treatments that are right for them.


What kind of sports injuries require immediate medical attention?

Athletes who have fallen on the field, ground or ice and hit their head should immediately be removed from the game. Staying in the game leaves the person prone to further, more severe injury. If it appears that the athlete just had the wind knocked out and is not feeling faint or lightheaded, the athlete is likely fine and does not have to worry about any developing head injuries. However, if the athlete experiences severe headaches or double vision or feels faint, medical attention should be sought immediately. Trauma to the head should not be taken lightly. Some people have fallen, hit their head and seem fine. However, a day or two later, they have died with no visual explanation. It isn’t until an autopsy is conducted that the medical examiner finds out that the person had a hemorrhage or other fatal head injury. Sports injury treatments, in some cases, can mean the difference between life and death. After an athlete has fallen and had a head injury, coaches and trainers should err on the side of caution and have every case examined at the closest hospital emergency room.
Many sports fans will tell you that it is common for athletes to tear or sprain the ACL in their knee. This can be one of the most painful sports injuries on the field. After an injury like this occurs, the injured party will likely not be able to get up on their own. It will take one or two teammates to get them back on their feet because they cannot put any weight on the injured area. There are no quick sports injury treatments for an injury like this. No coach or trainer is going to be able to say that all they need is a knee brace for a few weeks and they will be fine. Not even an emergency room doctor will be able to make that determination without conducting a series of X-rays or MRIs. If an ACL tear is severe enough, it will require surgery without question.
Any athlete who passes out on the field or appears to be having trouble breathing should be attended to right on the field. Find someone with a cellphone quickly and call for an ambulance. It may even be necessary to find someone who knows CPR. It is not likely that an injury caused these types of symptoms. These symptoms are likely brought on by more serious health conditions. The more information that can be provided during transport to the hospital, the higher the chances the athlete can be stabilized.


Common sports injury treatments

Sprains and strains are the most common injuries that occur on the playing field. Having an endless supply of ice packs on hand is a good start to providing sports injury treatments. No, you do not have to worry about having coolers to keep the ice packs frozen. These ice packs can be activated by snapping the cold pouch inside the pack. This makes it easy to take the injured athlete off the field, place them on the bench and ice their injury within minutes of it occurring. Did you know that quickly icing an area after a fall, sprain or strain can prevent bruising? Bruising is one of the hardest injuries to heal. Yes, the pain may subside quickly with proper medication and icing, but the discoloration can last a week or more, depending on the severity.
There is immediate pain involved with sprains and strains. An initial sharp pain can quickly turn into swelling and bruising or a throbbing ache. The most commonly used sports injury treatment used in these cases is the RICE method. If the coach or trainer suspects a sprain or strain, they will remove you from the playing field or maybe even the game, depending on the severity of the injury. This is known as the rest period. It is also common during the rest period to ice the injured area. Compressing the injury can be important during the healing process. If it is something like a sprained ankle, an elastic bandage can be wrapped around the injury to keep it well-preserved. Until the pain and swelling subside a little, you may want to walk without favoring the injured area as full weight on the injured area may cause more damage. Elevating the injured area is also an important part of healing, and the injury should be raised at least above the heart level for best results. The best way to elevate an injury is to sit in a recliner or a reclining couch. Lean all the way back to make sure your injured area is raised as high as it can go. If the injury is elevated but is not yet above the heart level, you can place pillows under the injury to lift it up. However, you should keep comfort in mind. You would not want to elevate your injured area so high that you will risk injury when you try to stand up.
When following the RICE method, ice should be applied every few hours. This method should be continued for the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury occurred. Sports injury treatments are not complete without an endless supply of anti-inflammatory medications. Yes, painkillers will relieve the pain, but it is not a relief that will last. Anti-inflammatory medications are the best for treating sports injuries because they will provide pain relief as well as relief from swelling. After you have finished with the RICE method, you can try heat therapy to the injured area. A heating pad applied to the injured area will promote circulation and healing. The swelling will begin to go down, and the elastic bandage can be removed. This is the time when you can slowly begin to exercise the injured area and stretch slowly. You should see the range of motion begin to slowly increase. Do not be surprised if you need to work out some stiffness in the area. You may need to work your strength back up in that area as well. If it was a severe sprain or strain, your doctor might even suggest physical therapy after healing to regain your strength.
Heat should never be used within 72 hours of an injury. It can increase circulation and increase the swelling in the injured area. The goal is to heal the injured area within 72 hours. Ice is the best way to bring down swelling and prevent bruising.


Following up after sports injury treatments

You can follow the medical advice you receive right down to the letter, but even so, healing complications can result. Should this happen to you while you are healing from a sports injury, it is best to follow up with your doctor right away, without hesitation. If you are still experiencing severe swelling and pain after 72 hours of injuring yourself, that means the injury is not healing correctly and something may be wrong. See a doctor immediately before the injury gets worse. If you are having trouble breathing or experiencing dizziness or fever, you should also seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms could point to a bad reaction to medication you may be taking or an infection occurring somewhere in your body.
If you begin to move the healing, injured part of your body and you happen to hear popping or crunching sounds, that could indicate there is bone rubbing on bone or muscle rubbing on muscle. Again, it is important to seek medical attention immediately before more severe injury occurs. If your healing injury cannot support weight being put on it and it is more than 72 hours after the injury occurred, it is not healing correctly. Get yourself to a doctor, and have an X-ray or an MRI to rule out further damage to the injured area.
If you are experiencing joint instability after you believe your injury should be healed, something is likely wrong. Do not keep taking anti-inflammatory medications hoping to solve the problem on your own. See a doctor and find out exactly why your joints are not moving correctly before you do more damage than is already done.
If more than 72 hours have passed from the time of the initial injury and your symptoms have not improved with sports medical treatments, you need to have your injury re-evaluated. If it was a typical sprain or strain, the RICE method and anti-inflammatory medications would have worked, and you would be healed. It is possible that your injury is more severe than initially thought. You may need a different course of treatment altogether. As the doctor is re-evaluating you, it is important to mention any new symptoms that have occurred since the original injury. This could make the difference in finding the right course of treatment.
