Welcome to our Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Page.

This painful condition involves the heel, which may hurt, feel hot or swell. The resulting pain is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a tough, but thin tissue layer that provides the foot with arch support.

In some instances, people consider plantar fasciitis as “heel spurs,” but this, however, isn’t accurate because heel spurs are a result of plantar fasciitis. To clarify, spurs are calcification deposits which form due to the fascia’s damage.

Besides daily discomfort, pain is more noticeable when you first get up in the morning. At other times, it is noticeable at the beginning of physical activity, but decreases as the body warms up. In fact, prolonged standing may also cause fascia pain.

This condition has two phases. Phase 1 is the inflammation, which can be treated by itself through numerous, conservative treatments. The doctor may provide steroid injections, strapping, taping, orthotics, as well as lasers in this phase. However, Phase 2 has occurred when the tissue is damaged (microtearing), and repair is required. For Phase 2 or chronic plantar fasciitis (fasciosis), high energy ESWT with the Dornier Epos Ultra is the only device approved by the FDA to create this repair.

Altogether, ESWT’s effects are best documented in areas of tissue density changes, such as where a tendon attaches a bone (enthesiopathies) or where a bone attaches to a ligament (desmopathies), respectively. For this reason, ESWT is effective for treating painful connective tissue in the heel. Additionally, it brings hope by alleviating pain, eliminating surgical risk factors and returning quality of life to many.
